Bodega Matsu was founded by a group of wine enthusiasts, so there is not a single founder of the winery. The group included Raúl Acha, a winemaker and viticulturist, and Gonzalo Lainez, a businessman who had a passion for wine and wanted to create a winery that expressed the unique character of the Toro region.
The idea for Bodega Matsu came about in 2004, when Acha and Lainez were exploring the vineyards of Toro and were struck by the quality of the Tinta de Toro grape variety. They decided to form a partnership with a third investor, Pedro Aibar, and together they began searching for old vineyards that they could purchase and cultivate using sustainable and organic farming practices.
The winery is named after the Japanese word for "wait", which reflects the winery's philosophy of waiting patiently for the grapes to ripen fully before harvesting them. This approach allows the grapes to develop their full flavor potential, resulting in wines with great complexity and depth.
The first vintage of Bodega Matsu was produced in 2006, and the winery quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality, terroir-driven wines.
