Metaxa is a delicious brandy that is considered the most famous among the strong spirits of Greece. Brandy Metaxa got its name from one of the founders - Spyros Metaxa. The production of Metaxa began in 1888, and just a few years later, the products began to be exported to different countries of the world. The basis of the Metaxa recipe is a distillate that is made from wines consisting of three grape varieties: Sultanina, Savvatyano and Black Corinth. After distillation, the alcohol is poured into French oak barrels and, depending on the variety of the future brandy, is aged from 3 to 30 years. The distillate obtained after aging is blended with high-quality muscat wines, extracts of petals and Greek herbs, which give the drink softness and richness, then the blend is placed in oak barrels for six months. Before bottling, the brandy is cooled for two days and filtered, thus making the drink resistant to precipitation. Spyros Metaxa, the founder of the company, moved to Piraeus in 1880 with his two brothers to try their luck. He began to combine various wines from his extensive vineyards and distill them in southern Attica using traditional methods. Since then, the magnificent result of his work - a unique world-famous dark brandy, bears his name. Metaxa is included in the top 50 global drinks and is the number 1 selling drink in Duty Free.
