The legendary Sassicaia is the first Supertoscanian wine created in 1968 by the famous oenologist Giacomo Tacis. The term "Supertoscanian" is used to describe red wines from the Italian region of Tuscany made from non-native grapes, particularly Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1978 Decanter magazine conducted a blind tasting of the best Cabernet Sauvignons from around the world with Sassicaia winning. In 1992, the Sassicaia 1985 vintage was awarded 100 points by the famous Robert Parker, becoming the first Italian wine to receive the highest rating. In 1994, Sassicaia even received a DOC qualification (Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC).
