Its peculiarity is aging in American bourbon barrels., proceeding according to the “solera” method, atypical for the rum industry. The age of the youngest spirit of the blend is 23 years, however, the blend also contains spirits distilled several decades ago.

"Gran Reserva" 23-year-old is the most honorable representative of Matusalem line of rums, an ultra-premium rum. The beverage, which appeared on the market only in 2010, is produced according to a secret recipe that has been passed down from generation to generation for more than 130 years.

The history of Matusalem rum dates back to the 70s of the 19th century, when the brothers Eduardo and Benjamin Kamp sailed from Spain to Cuba, intending to be seriously engaged in the production of rum on the island of Liberty. For the first time rum Matusalem was produced in 1872. It owes its name to the Spanish aphorism: "Esto es mas viejo que Matusalem", which means "Older than Matusalem", which refers to the apostle who lived up to 969 years. At the same time, the symbol of the brand, the soaring swallow, was intended to reflect the freedom-loving spirit of the people of Cuba. Today, Matusalem rum is produced in the Dominican Republic according to the original recipe of 1872, as evidenced by the inscription on the bottle - "Formula Original de Cuba".
